Sleep and Health

Sleep is a major contributor to leading a healthy life, yet we take it for granted - until we can't sleep. Despite the fact that almost all animals sleep, and us Canadians spend one third of our lives asleep, scientists are still not 100% sure of its exact purpose. The most likely theory "Restorative Theory of Sleep" suggests that processes during sleep heal and restore both the brain and body, ready for the rigours of the next day.

What is very apparent, however, are the problems associated with too little sleep, sleep deprivation or broken sleep, which result in reduced mental and physical performance. The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep, yet we all tend to sacrifice sleep for other activities to try and do more each day.

"For many, good sleep requires a radical simplification of many aspects of your life, but the benefits are worth it -- for mental and physical wellness now and later.”
Dr. Jim Gavin, Concordia University

With sleep affected as much by lifestyle factors as medical factors, it makes sense for CALM to help practitioners and therapists access the best information on sleep to help patients with sleep-related disorders including:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Snoring

A lifestyle and healthy living approach can also help reduce dependence on devices such as a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine for sleep apnea sufferers.
